Trip Dates: Feb 27 - Mar 2, 2020
Class II | Hotel
5 days, 4 Nights
Puerto Rico: a tropical island vacation and adventure paradise you don't even need a passport for! Come with us to explore the jungle, rappel into caves, kayak a glowing bio-luminescent bay, float the rivers, snorkel and kayak the crystal clear waters of one of the world's best beaches, and learn to surf. We'll stay in beautiful San Juan, journey to the island of Culebra, and hike in the rain forest preserve of Arecibo.
The devastation of Hurricane Maria is still affecting Puerto Rico, but the island is functional, beautiful, and in need of our support! A portion of the proceeds of this trip goes to the restoration efforts, and the areas visited in this trip are all vibrant and ready for us.
Activity Level: Class II; Involves full days of physical activity, but as long as you know how to swim, no prior skills are needed!
Lodging: Hotel, prices based on double occupancy.
Included Meals: Breakfasts and some dinners.
Day One, Thursday
We arrive in San Juan and check into our hotel, with some time to explore before dinner. Then we'll travel to Laguna Grande, where we'll hop into glass-bottomed kayaks and paddle through mangroves on our way to the bio-luminescent bay. As night falls, we'll be treated to an amazing light show of glowing plankton, learning about this fragile ecosystem and paddling unobtrusively, creating glowing trails in our wake. After paddling back, we'll head back into San Juan for the night.
Day Two, Friday
An early start means a day of adventure! Today, we travel to Arecibo to explore the rain forest. We'll hike through the jungle, learning about the flora and fauna on the way. We'll learn spelunking skills as we rappel into a cave, float down underground rivers and through towering limestone canyons, jump into waterfalls, and more in one of the most unique ways to explore the rain forest.
Returning to San Juan, we have a few free hours to explore before meeting a local guide in historic and beautiful Old San Juan, where we go for a walking food tour of the colorful old city, trying delicious plantains, sofritos, and locally distilled rum.
Day Three, Saturday
We board a ferry to the island of Culebra, world famous for its crystal clear waters and white sand beaches. We'll kayak through the turquoise waters of the Luis Pena channel, with its incredible coral, looking for sea turtles (it's a known and protected feeding ground!). We'll hop out of our kayaks for some snorkeling, getting up-close and personal with the amazing tropical fish found in this marine reserve. Paddling back, we'll then head over to Flamenco Beach, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Our ferry ride takes us back to the mainland at sunset.
Day Four, Sunday
We spend this morning learning how to surf! We'll start off with a quick stretch and warm-up on the beach, learn the basics of surfing, and then paddle out into the water as we practice catching waves. After we become certifiable surfer babes, we'll grab a well-deserved lunch and enjoy a free afternoon in Puerto Rico to explore as you please. If you’d like a massage, we can help book that time for you! You’ve earned it.
Day Five, Monday
On our last morning in paradise, before we head back to our daily lives with stories and photos to brag about, we have brunch together and toast to an incredible adventure!
