Trip Dates: October 3 - 6, 2019
Class II | Hotel & Camping
4 days, 3 Nights
Starting at $1225
There’s no better time to be in the mountains of New England than when they’re lit with the colors of autumn. On this trip, a small group of AdventurHERs will learn the basics of hiking and backpacking, from what gear to bring and what clothes to wear all the way to campsite selection, navigation, and staying safe in the backcountry. This is a progressive and intensive skill-building trip that will take you from newbie hiker to confident backpacker in just 4 days.
Easing gently into the weekend, we’ll start with easy hikes and learn the basics of moving through the mountains, staying in a hotel on nights one & two. We’ll build from a half day hike to a full day hike to an overnight hike, learning necessary skills for future hiking and backpacking trips while enjoying the best foliage and mountain vistas New England has to offer!
This trip is specially designed for women with little hiking experience who want to learn what it takes to safely and confidently navigate a backpacking adventure, with an emphasis on teaching you what you’ll need to strike out on your own in the future! There are 3 gear options, defined in the Details section below, ranging from fully outfitted to a BYO gear option. By the end of the weekend, you’ll have the skills to stay safe, be prepared & confident, leave no trace, and have fun on backpacking trips of your own.
Every AdventurHER trip is led by a professional local guide and a Dedicated Adventure Manager (our DAM girls) from AdventurHER.
Activity Level: Class II; Involves full days of physical activity, but no previous backpacking skills are required!

We meet in northern New Hampshire, deep in the Presidential Range, known for its rugged and remote beauty. After settling into our hotel, we meet our mountain guides for the weekend and begin our hiking education! Day one will be spent partially indoors, with an introduction to hiking in the White Mountains, and then brought outside for an afternoon hike, learning more in nature’s classroom. That night, we’ll gather for dinner and get stoked for a full weekend of beautiful autumn hiking!
After a good breakfast, we meet back up with our guides for a more in-depth education further covering planing and preparation, packing and gear, then the arts of hiking covering myriad aspects of being on trail from scrambling to etiquette, with a longer hike planned for the day. Depending on conditions, we may be to waterfalls, on ridgelines, or up to rocky summits. That night, we’ll go into North Conway, the epicenter of New Hampshire’s adventure community, and rub elbows with rock and ice climbers, mountaineers, mountain bikers, skiers, and more.
Transferring our luggage out of the hotel to prep for our overnight hike and first foray into backpacking, we fill up on breakfast and hit the trail! Life doesn’t get much simpler than a backpacker’s life: eat, sleep, and hike; it’s a brilliant escape from daily life, fun, and very freeing. Having good camp craft is necessary to making the most of the experience, though. It can mean the difference between being comfortable, fed, and dry, versus being a wet, smelly, hungry, disorganized mess. As we head out for our overnight, we will break down what to carry, how to carry it, legal site selection, the principles of Leave No Trace or LNT, making food, water management, bear and animal control, waste disposal, fires, weather, and a whole lot more. We’ll sleep out under a full moon, snuggled into our tents, bellies full of camp food eaten ‘round a fire.
We break down camp, eat a trail breakfast, and hike back down to town for a celebratory lunch — we’re officially a group of backpacking-ready mountain women!
